Character Name: Mageuzi
Name Meaning: "revolution"
Nicknames: (all derogatory) Spotty, Cubspots, Babyspots, Freak, Freakshow, Lipard (meaning lion-leopard cross, though he isn't one), Leopard's Boy (again, not really true)
Species: lion (1/2 marozi, 1/2 delta island lion)
Group: Malipizi slave
Parents: Father: unknown, presumed to be one of the Delta pride males; Mother: Koka "kindle a fire" deceased (executed); Sister: Huria "Freedom" deceased (got sick as a cub and died)
Appearance: Marozi (spotted lion (cryptid lion coloration); info about marozis: www.messybeast.com/genetics/li…
) cinnamon-colored, with reddish spots, beginnings of a scraggly, thin light-orange mane, and amber eyes. Also, slightly smaller than a regular lion. Thin from being half-starved. Tail is broken and kinked in two places, and most of his tail-tuft is gone (caused by mange). Torn left ear. Intricately criss-crossed slave-mark scars on each shoulder, plus a shallow but wide scar saddling his back to a jagged termination on his right haunch where a particularly cruel tormentor deliberately tore a strip of skin from his spotted back as a (rather grisly) "souvenir" of their visit. Several other small scars and mangy spots. His claws and fangs have been filed down to blunt-ness.
Background/Personality: Mageuzi's mother was the only survivor of a small isolated mountain pride of other marozis (spotted lions) ravaged by fire. She fled the fire, and eventually found her way into the Flatlands region, (After the fire, she changed her name to Koka, "kindle a fire", in order to honor her lost family, and because she was superstitious and believed it to have been her fault.), and was living as a rogue on the outskirts there when it was conquered and she was captured by Delta guards. She pleaded for her life, and was allowed to live, as a slave...The males had their fun with this strange, spotted female, then tossed her in with the other slaves. There, she gave birth to two cubs: Mageuzi and his sister, Huria.
Huria did not live long under the harsh conditions of slavery, and grew sick and died when she was but a few days old, before her eyes had even opened, leaving Mageuzi as the only remaining cub. Koka viewed names to have great meaning and significance, which is why she named her son "Mageuzi" in hopes that someday he would be able to bring about a change for the slaves. (Her daughter was named Huria, "freedom," posthumously, because she had already gained freedom through her death.) Mageuzi himself was never very strong either, and grew up thin and scruffy. His mother was starving, as she gave all her available food to her one remaining cub. In desperation, Koka futilely attacked one of the Delta pridemembers that were guarding the the lioness-slaves on a forced hunt, when she wasn't even allowed to eat from the prey she had brought down. She was beaten into submission, and then dragged back to the pride to be "made an example of"...right in front of her son.
Mageuzi had always been a typical cub, trying to stay as happy as possible, despite being a slave. His mother had always told him "Things will get better, you'll see." in order to keep him from getting too depressed about their situation. Seeing his mother executed right in front of him broke him. At least outwardly. He turned into a docile but aloof shell of his former self. He never dares to disobey orders from the overseers, and seldom speaks at all (other than answering direct questions from the oppressors. He will give the shortest answer possible in that case.) unless he trusts someone. And that trust is hard to win. Inwardly, though, his heart burns for revenge...
He is often seen as stupid by the Malipizi pride, and is used as somewhat of an amusement by them...a sort of "freak show" if you will. Under Ghariki, the Delta pridemembers (maybe including his own father, whoever he is) kept him in a tiny rock cave (with several 'windows' barred with bones), on the slave island, and visited every now and then, forcing him to sit or stand for hours as they poked and proded at his spotted pelt, and hurled insulting nicknames at him while laughing. The exit of his prison was barred by a large ribcage, too heavy for him to push aside in his weakened condition, though his tormentors had no trouble going in or out. He knew never to leave it without an escort anyway. The cave is not quite above flood-level, and in the rainy season, it fills with delta water halfway up his paws...sometimes even to his ankles, and he was forced to sit in it, though there is a small raised area he could sit on, but it's not very big. This has happened since mid-cub-hood, when he failed to lose his baby-spots when most cubs did. He puts up with it stoically, in hopes that some day they'll drop their guard, and he'll find a way to escape...maybe even wreak vengeance for the death of his mother.
For now though, he waits, taking note of possible allies from his limited vantage, whilst pretending to be the "dumb stupid freak" his captors think he is.
When the regime-shift happened, Mageuzi was one of the unfortunate slaves to have been rounded up by Sefu and his followers and forced to march eastward. Caught off-guard, and weak from being half-starved all his life, there was nothing he could do but comply.
Updated refsheet for :iconHeartOfTheKalahari:
How do I lion? At least he doesn't look like a derpy cheetah anymore. Spots and (most) scars are non-specific. The only scars that really matter are the two shoulder ones, the large one across his back, the tear in his left ear, and the mangy tail. Tried a new style with the spots. (faded to 50%) Not sure which I like better, as both are kind of awkward-looking.
TOTALLY not a cop-out to be moved back to active status. >.> yeah... At least ONE of the drawings on here is new...
Anyway, I'm planning to make something to illustrate his move from Delta to Malipizi in the near future, and since I'm faster at writing than drawing, it may end up being a story.
Sorry for my absence for so long. I don't want to be inactive, I just don't know how to jump into RP here.
